Fieldside Family Session in Prince Edward County with Three Generations
Some sessions are pure nostalgia in the making—and this one was no exception. This extended family shoot in Prince Edward County was extra special to me because it wasn’t just any family—it was my family.
Every year, my uncle and cousins get together for a family session. Over the past few years, they had been working with my associate while I took a step back from photographing families, but this year was the first time I was behind the camera again. And let me tell you—it felt good to be home.
We met right in their backyard fields where hay had just been freshly cut and baled. The sun was dropping low over the County, casting that golden glow photographers dream of. And the kids? They were completely in their element—climbing haybails, laughing, chasing each other, and somehow managing to be a little wild and completely adorable all at once. It was chaos in the best possible way.
The cousins are all close in age, and it shows. There’s a rhythm to how they interact, a comfort in being themselves. The kind of childhood you hope they’ll remember clearly when they’re grown. At one point, they all climbed onto one of the big haybails, and I turned around to see my Uncle Pat watching them with the proudest look on his face. These are his people—his legacy. And this was their moment.
Shooting people you’re close to always feels a little different. There’s less structure, more flow. It’s not about perfect poses; it’s about catching the magic that’s already happening. And that’s what this session was all about—documenting family exactly as they are. Messy, beautiful, full of love.
The kids couldn’t wait to see the photos (little Bea told me that 24 hours was way too long to wait—tough crowd!). But honestly, I get it. When photos feel like memories instead of just pictures, you want them back as fast as possible.
If you’ve been thinking about booking an extended family session—this is your sign. Whether it’s the chaos or the calm, the silly faces or the sweet snuggles, these photos are how your family’s story gets remembered. Not just by you, but by the generations to come.
